Special Topics in Professional Accounting: Budgeting and Financial Reporting for Intercollegiate Athletics Managers - ACCTG 560 (3 credits)
Discussions and case analyses dealing with special current topics relevant to accounting. Topics include creating and using budgets and financial statements to make decisions, the role of accounting in athletic departments, and how incentives influence the financial reporting process. BF&S Core Competency: Budget and financial management skills in public and private institutions, including specifics within intercollegiate athletics departments.

Education as a Moral Endeavor - EDLPS 520 (3 credits)
This course engages the students in an exploration of fundamental questions that have faced educational leaders in the past and most likely will continue to face them in the future. Emphasis is placed on enduring educational problems and fundamental philosophical issues, concepts that feature centrally in educational discourse, and conceptual analysis as a means for clarifying decisions regarding educational policy and practice. CS&S Core Competency: Moral implications of athletics within context of colleges' and universities' educational missions; purposes of higher education in democratic society and role of sport in that discussion.

Sociology of Education - EDLPS 540 (3 credits)
This course introduces students to sociological inquiry in education through systematic examination of one particular theme: educational inequality in the United States. After explicating the "facts" about unequal educational outcomes across racial/ethnic, class and gender groups, several questions in intercollegiate athletics will be addressed. CS&S Core Competency: Sociological dimensions of race, gender, and sport within higher education with the examination of associated policies and outcomes.

Special Topics in Educational Studies: Leadership Decision-Making in Uncertainty: Empirical Tools - EDLPS 549 (3 credits)
Methods of assessment and evaluation with a focus on strategic planning and decision-making, accountability systems and assessment-driven decision-making. Students will learn to use practical statistical skills, with an emphasis on the use and interpretation of data to guide decision-making. LD Core Competency: Methods of assessment and evaluation with a focus on strategic planning and decision-making, accountability systems and assessment-driven decision-making.

Human Resources in Educational Organizations - EDLPS 553 (3 credits)
Analysis of factors involved in human resource problems related to operation of educational organizations. Motivation, perception, communication, role analysis, and dynamics of groups are studied through use of cases and seminal literature. CS&S Core Competency: Student-athlete welfare development. Academic support, training and conditioning, athletic training/medical and other services provided to foster the student-athlete experience.

Development & Fundraising in Higher Education - EDLPS 579 (3 credits)
The IAL segment on Development and Fundraising is designed to allow students to learn the importance of a comprehensive fundraising program in the Intercollegiate Athletics environment. As rising costs and diminishing institutional support becomes more and more prevalent, the need for support from those who admire and encourage the intercollegiate athletic experience becomes urgently important. Students will learn the basic components of development: research, solicitation, asking, stewardship, etc. Annual giving, major giving, and the principal gift will be explained, and the relationship of the various outreach components of the Department of Athletics, such as Marketing, Promotions, Sponsorships and Communications to the Development/Fundraising operation will be explored.

Legal Issues in Higher Education - EDPLS 583 (3 credits)
Legal implications of university operations and an explanation of the legal and constitutional rights of students, faculty, and staff within the university. Special attention given to torts, student protections, including due process; university liabilities and Title IX. CS&S Core Competency: Athletics legal issues including NCAA rules, compliance and important dimensions of higher education law.

College Student Populations and Experiences - EDLPS 590 (3 credits)
Exploration of issues pertaining to student athlete welfare and student development. Explore issues of academic support, training and conditioning, athletic training/medical and other services provided to foster the student-athlete experience. Examine the responsibilities of athletic leaders in developing overall department cultures oriented toward the welfare of student athletes. CS&S Core Competency: Student-athlete welfare development. Special Topics in Higher Education: College Athletic Leadership Ethics - EDLPS 598 (3 credits)
Addresses the moral challenges facing leaders in intercollegiate athletics. Examines the values and virtues important to sustained ethical leadership as well as strategies to build strong institutional cultures and support ethical practices in institutions. LD Core Competency: Leadership ethics

Special Topics in Higher Education: Events and Facilities Management - EDLPS 598 (3 credits)
Athletic departments must plan and management a variety of events including team practices, competitions, development and alumni activities, hosted tournaments, and outreach activities. This course will engage students in understanding the planning process and operations around event production, facilities management, staffing, scheduling, and other event services. Capital planning will also be examined. BF&S Core Competency: Event production and facilities management, including an understanding of capital planning, development events, and alumni relations.

Special Topics in Higher Education: Marketing and Advertising in Intercollegiate Athletics - ELDPS 598 (3 credits)
Participants learn the inner workings of a sports organization, gaining broad insight into the following areas: media relations, public relations (publicity and publications); sales and marketing (client services); corporate sales and ticket sales; entertainment (scoreboard presentation; halftime and pre-game activities); web site and new media (content, design and distribution). BF&S Core Competency: Marketing, advertising and sports information services, and the role of the media in shaping community relations.

Independent Studies in Education: Professional Portfolio Development - EDLPS 599 (1-3 credits)
Development of a professional learning portfolio as the culminating project of the IAL program. This portfolio will provide concrete evidence of students' mastery of each of the core competencies. This will be accomplished through the presentation of key assignments, projects, and other materials that are the students' best representations of their learning for those courses. Also included in the portfolio will be students' responses to a comprehensive examination of the course material.

Internship: Intercollegiate Athletics Rotations and Internships - EDLPS 601 (1-9 credits)
Supervised rotations or internship experiences in core functional areas within intercollegiate athletics. LD Competency: Awareness of primary work responsibilities and functions in a broad array of areas within a collegiate athletic department gained through supervised internships and career rotations. Coordination of units within the athletic department and the integration of the department with the broader institution, athletic conferences, and other organizations.

Special Topics in Information Management: Information Management and Technology in Sports - IMT 525 (3 credits)
This course seeks to introduce students to the role and use of information in the context of sport; to analyze sports from an information perspective. At the end of this course, it is expected that students will be able to think critically and apply generic concepts about the roles and uses of information in various sports situations; recognize how information resources, services, processes, and systems are applied in sports contexts; and discuss what is generic or unique to sport in terms of use of information resources, services, processes, and systems. BF&S Core Competency: Modern and emerging technology systems and their applications in administering intercollegiate athletic functions.
